This paper reviews the physical principles that underlie the applications of NMR logging. NMR logging is sensitive to some important formation properties to which classical logs have no sensitivity. As a result, it has a wide range of potential applications. Getting the most from it requires an understanding of how NMR properties are related to those important formation properties. This paper explains these relations briefly. It provides references to fuller explanations and to the published laboratory petrophysical studies that constitute the scientific basis of field applications such as the estimation of permeability. We emphasize the assumptions that are used in connecting NMR properties with petrophysical properties of rocks.

Nuclear magnetic resonance NMR has been, and continues to be, widely used in chemistry, physics, and biomedicine and, more recently, in clinical diagnosis for imaging the internal structure of the human body. The same physical principles involved in clinical imaging also apply to imaging any fluid-saturated porous media, including reservoir rocks.

Nuclear magnetic resonance NMR logging is a type of well logging that uses the NMR response of a formation to directly determine its porosity and permeability , providing a continuous record along the length of the borehole. NMR logging exploits the large magnetic moment of hydrogen , which is abundant in rocks in the form of water. The NMR signal amplitude is proportional to the quantity of hydrogen nuclei present in a formation and can be calibrated to give a value for porosity that is free from lithology effects. Uniquely, a petrophysicist can also analyse the rate of decay of the NMR signal amplitude to obtain information on the permeability of the formation - a crucial quantity in hydrocarbon exploration. The most important mechanism affecting NMR relaxation is grain-surface relaxation.
