Roman and Greek Gods (Reviewer).docx

In the ancient Greek world, the Twelve great gods and goddesses of the Greeks were referred to as the Olympian Gods, or the Twelve Olympians. The name of this powerful group of gods comes from Mount Olympus, where the council of 12 met to discuss matters. All 12 Olympians had a home on Mount Olympus and that was where they were most commonly found. Hades , the god of the Underworld, preferred to live there, and Poseidon often chose to stay in his palace under the sea. Most of the other Olympians would be on Mount Olympus year round unless they were travelling. Hestia used to be one of the Olympians, but the constant fighting and bickering between the gods annoyed her and she eventually gave up her seat to the god of wine, Dionysus.

According to Ancient Greek mythology and legends, detailed in the Greek Creation Myth and adopted by the Roman Empire, the gods and goddesses consisted of three major groups and generations:. The Olympian gods achieved supremacy over the older, first, primeval gods and the giant Titan gods when they were victorious in the Battle of the Titans. The names and roles of the principle Roman and Greek Gods and Goddesses that feature in ancient mythology have been detailed in the following chart covering the Greek and Roman counterparts of the Ancient first, or primeval gods, the Titans and the Olympian gods.

Although Hades was a major ancient Greek god, and was the brother of the first generation of Olympians Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Demeter, and Hestia , his realm was the underworld , far from Olympus, and thus was not usually considered to be one of the Olympians. The Olympians were a race of deities , primarily consisting of a third and fourth generation of immortal beings, worshipped as the principal gods of the Greek pantheon and so named because of their residency atop Mount Olympus. They gained their supremacy in a ten-year-long war of gods , in which Zeus led his siblings to victory over the previous generation of ruling gods, the Titans. Although Hades was a major deity in the Greek pantheon , and was the brother of Zeus and the other first generation of Olympians, his realm was far away from Olympus in the underworld , and thus he was not usually considered to be one of the Olympians. The canonical number of Olympian gods was twelve, but besides the thirteen principal Olympians listed above, there were many other residents of Olympus, who thus might be considered to be Olympians.
