Methodology for integrated manufacturing planning and control systems design | SpringerLink

Manufacturing planning and control systems MPC design or redesign in the current dynamic industrial environment is a complex process and must be based on a true understanding of the business needs of a particular enterprise and the physical facilities and resources available to satisfy those needs. Interdomain relationships between various elements, both within and outside the system, must be considered in this context; a necessary requirement for any integrated systems design. Many past efforts in the field seem to lack this approach and as a result changes in the business needs are difficult, if not impossible, to incorporate in the current MPC systems without a major redesign. The methodology starts with an analysis of the business needs and considers the coordination and communications requirements between various disparate units and domains of an organization. To aid the design process, the methodology uses many well-known tools and methods in its various stages; their functions and usefulness are discussed.

Production control

In the process of multiassortment repetitive production planning the designation of operating system parameters for the steady state in which after the last operation the return to the first operation in the sequence of productive resources occurs is required. The length of steady state of the system is determined by the work of the critical resource. Determination of resources sequence for the steady state gives possibility to determine the processing times for processes in the system without taking into account the transitional phases. During the execution of this type of production, in addition to the phase in which production takes place in the steady state, transition phases connected with starting start-up phase and finishing work in the system cease phase , and the phases associated with the changes in ongoing sequences in steady states can be distinguished. The article presents the problem of estimating the duration of the start-up phase and the cease phase in the concurrent multiassortment production systems, in which access to the resources is regulated by the local dispatching rules. A method and a procedure of creating a schedule for the transition phases using the integration between the systems of production planning and scheduling is presented.

Production planning and control is an important task of Production Manager. It has to see that production process is properly decided in advance and it is carried out as per the plan. Production is related to the conversion of raw materials into finished goods. This conversion process involves a number of steps such as deciding what to produce, how to produce, when to produce, etc. These decisions are a part, of production planning. Merely deciding about the task is not sufficient.
