Plastic Parts Design Mechanical engineering Interview Questions,,Dimu's Tutorials,

Adhering to some basic rules of injection molded part design will result in a part that, in addition to being easier to manufacture and assemble, will typically be much stronger in service. Designing plastic parts is a complex task involving many factors that address a list of requirements of the application. How the molten plastic enters, fills, and cools within the cavity to form the part largely drives what form the features in that part must take.

Basics of Injection Molding Design

Injection moulding is a manufacturing process for producing parts by injecting molten material into a mould. Injection moulding can be performed with a host of materials mainly including metals for which the process is called die-casting , glasses , elastomers , confections, and most commonly thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers. Material for the part is fed into a heated barrel, mixed Using a helical shaped screw , and injected Forced into a mould cavity , where it cools and hardens to the configuration of the cavity. Injection moulding is widely used for manufacturing a variety of parts, from the smallest components to entire body panels of cars. Advances in 3D printing technology, using photopolymers which do not melt during the injection moulding of some lower temperature thermoplastics, can be used for some simple injection moulds. Parts to be injection moulded must be very carefully designed to facilitate the moulding process; the material used for the part, the desired shape and features of the part, the material of the mould, and the properties of the moulding machine must all be taken into account. The versatility of injection moulding is facilitated by this breadth of design considerations and possibilities.

API engineers and designers can work with you to develop and design your plastic injection molded component. To ensure a quality part, there are three major areas of focus throughout the design stage:. The designers and engineers at API have over combined years of experience in designing parts for plastic injection molding, selecting materials, and processing resins specializing in engineering and high performance resins. This guide was designed to demonstrate the basic elements of proper plastic part design. A straight pull mold is designed so that when the two halves A side and B side of the mold separate from each other, there is no plastic blocking the path of the metal in the direction of the pull. Undercuts on the part cause this blockage of path and require an action in the mold cams, core pulls, etc. Action in the mold can have a major impact on the cost and overall size of a mold.
