This article introduces current-injection photonic-crystal lasers featuring ultralow power consumption, which were achieved by using photonic-crystal nanocavities and small buried active regions fabricated through a crystal regrowth process. They should provide light sources suitable for future lower-power-consumption information and communications technology ICT devices. Photonic networks have been developed for long-reach optical-fiber communications telecom. Recently, optical communication technologies have begun to be applied to short-reach data transmission in datacenters datacom as optical interconnections between routers and datacenters and between racks and between electronic circuit boards, as shown in Fig.

Optics and photonics are technical enablers for many areas of the economy, and dramatic technical advances have had a major impact on daily life. For example, in the last decade, advances in optical fiber communications have permitted a nearly fold increase in the amount of information that can be transmitted from place to place, enabling a society-transforming Internet to thrive. Further proof that optics and photonics are technical enablers can be seen in the laser. A laser provides a source of light that can be 1 coherent, meaning that a group of photons can act as a single unit; and. Accessed July 30,

Photonics is the physical science of light photon generation, detection, and manipulation through emission , transmission , modulation , signal processing , switching, amplification , and sensing. The term photonics developed as an outgrowth of the first practical semiconductor light emitters invented in the early s and optical fibers developed in the s. The word 'photonics' is derived from the Greek word "phos" meaning light which has genitive case "photos" and in compound words the root "photo-" is used ; it appeared in the late s to describe a research field whose goal was to use light to perform functions that traditionally fell within the typical domain of electronics, such as telecommunications, information processing, etc. Photonics as a field began with the invention of the laser in Other developments followed: the laser diode in the s, optical fibers for transmitting information, and the erbium-doped fiber amplifier. These inventions formed the basis for the telecommunications revolution of the late 20th century and provided the infrastructure for the Internet.
