While the prompts and cues in a yoga class may seem like simple instruction, doing the poses in a mindful way actually helps the brain rewire. You are giving yourself the experience of being in the body in a safe, fun, challenging, and empowering way. Thus, yoga actually changes your relationship to your body.

It provided me with a sense of community and connection. It forced me to challenge perfectionism because you can't be 'good' at yoga; your body responds differently each day. If you push it, you hurt yourself and it gets you nowhere. Through yoga, I learned how connected my mind is to my body. For instance, my resistance to back bends encouraged me to think about my fear of opening up to people and being vulnerable, and I learned that balancing poses are difficult when my mind is distracted.

What follows are our questions in italics, and their thoughtful responses. People with eating disorders have a disordered sense of self-awareness in that they no longer can read or respond appropriately to their physical or emotional cues, such as hunger or anxiety. They are unaware of, or disconnected from, their own self needs. Questions related to interoceptive awareness are included on the EDI because over time it became clear that people with eating disorders need to be assessed and treated to help them gain self-awareness in order to know what they are feeling and how to explain their feelings. Dan Siegel is among many who study mindfulness and mind training techniques that help individuals gain self-awareness and an increased ability to regulate emotions and behavior. Yoga is one way of doing this. How can yoga help to discover the true self and why is this important in eating disorder recovery?
