Algebra from Arabic "al-jabr", literally meaning "reunion of broken parts" is one of the broad parts of mathematics, together with number theory, geometry and analysis. Algorism is the technique of performing basic arithmetic by writing numbers in place value form and applying a set of memorized rules and facts to the digits. In mathematics and computer science, an algorithm is an unambiguous specification of how to solve a class of problems. Arabic influence on the Spanish language overwhelmingly dates from the Muslim rule in the Iberian Peninsula between and A decimal separator is a symbol used to separate the integer part from the fractional part of a number written in decimal form. Mohammed ibn-Musa al-Khwarizmi was born sometime before A. He flourished as a mathematician and astronomer who was a faculty member at the "House of Wisdom" established in Baghdad by Al-Mamun. As a scholar at the House of Wisdom, al-Khwarizmi, together with his noted colleagues the Banu Musa, directed and engaged in intellectual interests ranging from algebra and geometry to astronomy and the translation of Greek scientific manuscripts lib. Al-Khwarizmi wrote numerous books that played important roles in arithematic and algebra. In his work, De numero indorum Concerning the Hindu Art of Reckoning , it was based presumably on an Arabic translation of Brahmagupta where he gave a full account of the Hindu numerals which was the first to expound the system with its digits 0,1,2,3,

Al-jabr was a landmark work in the history of mathematics , establishing algebra as an independent discipline, and with the term "algebra" itself derived from Al-jabr. The Compendious Book provided an exhaustive account of solving for the positive roots of polynomial equations up to the second degree. Katz regards Al-Jabr as the first true algebra text that is still extant. Al-Khwarizmi's text can be seen to be distinct not only from the Babylonian tablets , but also from the Diophantus ' Arithmetica. It no longer concerns a series of problems to be resolved, but an exposition which starts with primitive terms in which the combinations must give all possible prototypes for equations, which henceforward explicitly constitute the true object of study. On the other hand, the idea of an equation for its own sake appears from the beginning and, one could say, in a generic manner, insofar as it does not simply emerge in the course of solving a problem, but is specifically called on to define an infinite class of problems.
