As I started planning the move of my grade elevens from a unit focusing on narrative nonfiction into a reading unit on informational text, I debated on how to start. I had simply told them to read the articles, annotate the text, and to write a one-page response to the articles. The Article of the Week is a great resource. The topics are current and give my international students an opportunity to pay attention to the news. The articles are thought-provoking and I look forward to some deep discussion as we get further along in this unit. I started a small book club at my school recently.

Here I really tried to find picture books that have a true memory moment, which means a character stops the story to share a memory, these can be harder to find. Happy reading! Emma and the Whale by Julie Case and Lee White has two flashbacks in it that can be considered brief memory moments.

I started using it in my sixth grade English classes and saw levels of analysis I had never achieved when using traditional methods of close reading. Their concrete, user-friendly strategy made even the most difficult texts accessible to all.
