Better Together: Pairing Fiction and Nonfiction in the High School Classroom

New standards emphasize reading informational texts along with literature—not to mention the importance of reading across texts. With more and more frequency, language arts teachers are being asked to bring nonfiction into the English classroom and to connect it with novels, poems and plays. Essential questions are broad, thematic explorations that serve as a useful lens for looking at multiple texts. What is lost or gained in the quest for success? Instead of using only literary criticism or other nonfiction written about a literary text, nonfiction can be viewed more broadly in ways that give kids a chance to engage with literature on their own terms.

PreK—K , 1—2 , 3—5. The goal of the classroom library is to encourage and foster a love of reading. While there is lots of great fiction for kids, it is important to collect and display a wide selection of non-fiction books as well.

Classrooms are filled with a variety of learners and therefore classrooms should be filled with a variety of books. While some students find fiction books more appealing, other students are more drawn to nonfiction titles. Pairing fiction and nonfiction texts will help engage all students in a variety of subjects.
