Royal Books and Holy Bones: Essays in Medieval Christianity - Harvard Book StoreHis later book The Voices of Morebath brilliantly resurrected the inhabitants of a village in Devon as they navigated the turbulent waters of 16th-century religion. His new work is an absorbing collection of essays that mostly focuses on the material culture of medieval religious belief: the painted and carved images of Christ and the saints; illuminated manuscripts and books; the shrines to which pilgrims made their way; the relics to which they gave their devotion. Within these limits, he is surprisingly wide-ranging. Get The International Pack for free for your first 30 days for unlimited Smartphone and Tablet access. Already a member?
Welcome to the Church Times
In , Eamon Duffy created a sensation in Reformation studies by publishing his groundbreaking book The Stripping of the Altars. In it he demonstrated the health of late medieval religion in England and that the thesis hitherto accepted that the Reformation came to wipe away a corrupt and rotten Church was essentially false. In this book follow-up to The Stripping of the Altars, Duffy makes further soundings in late medieval religion, but drills down to the particular and avoids any wide historical sweep. This book is illustrated by a small collection of full color plates which further demonstrate the richness of late medieval religion. THIS tremendous read is a collection of essays published and lectures given in the past two decades, some revised for inclusion here. Duffy next explores a range of questions about forgery and hoax in the famous puzzle of Beinecke MS. Last in this section comes an essay on the ways in which the Psalms were adapted for pious lay use. An essay on late medieval pilgrimages follows, sketching the changing pattern of such journeys. The last essay in this section looks at prayer to the Virgin in the late Middle Ages. These are themes presaging those of the last section, when this spiritual world-view became highly controversial under the criticism of Protestant Reformers.
